Is Hypothyroidism Hereditary?

If my mother and sister both have hypotyroidism will I be more prone to it? I am 48 and have gained 10 pounds in the last month having kept my weight stable for 10 years at 155. I am 5 feet 8 inches. I have always had cold extremities but this year my hands have hurt from the cold! Is this a logical place to start?

Thaks for asking this question.

In your cheif complain you mention weight gain and cold intolerance this two symptoms indicate hypothyroidism.

Any other symptoms like constipation, amenorrhea etc helpful you to rule out hypothyroidism.

You have to check your t3 (triiodothyroxin) ,t4 (thyroxin), TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) leval.
TSH leval specially helpful to rule out primary hypothyroidism. TSH level raised in primary hypothyroidism.

you inform that your mother and sister have history of hypothyroidism so genetically possible that you have chanse to occure hypothyroidism.

After thyroid functinon test if hypothyroidism present than you have to take thyroxin .

Also control in diet helpful you to control hypothyroidism.

I hope this answer helpful to you.

thank you.
