My new born Hemoglobin level was about 12 mg/dl at 24 h age and he is 7 days old now with a level of 10.2..... he had a bad jaundice and got a phototherapy for 5 days after birth, his bilirubin level now is 178.... should we worry about his Hemoglobin level being too low?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for asking.
I can understand your concerns.
Yes the haemoglobin levels for the baby is low for his age of 7 days. If the child is otherwise feeding well then I would recommend you to start iron supplementation fr him. If his haemoglobin is not corrected then it may lead to growth failure.
You may start iron at the dose of 3 mg per kg of elemental iron. If you give me his weight then I can tell you the exact dose to be given.
I hope I have helped you.
Thank you.
