Is Head Bath Safe After Stroke In Elderly Patients?
Is it alright to have a head bath 8 days after a stroke? Patients age 89 years. Patient has always experienced low pressure. Height approx 5ft 3 ins. He has also experienced six months ago, stones in the gall bladder for which only medication could be administered. Thereafter, the stroke was the only health condition, which happened 8 days ago.
Welcome to HCM and thank you for the query. Appreciate your concern for the person under your care. There is no harm in giving a bath to a person who had a stroke but certain precautions are required. 1. Temperature of the water- It should be lukewarm or at the body temperature. Hot water leads to vasodilatation and drop in blood pressure which can worsen the stroke. Cold water leads to chills and shivering. 2. time of bath - avoid a bath immediately after a feed. 3. Be gentle . Movement of joints in the limbs involved is good but be gentle. Take care Dr Noble Zachariah
