Hello Doctor, am a female aged 28 years and was diagonised with UTI three weeks ago. I was given Erythromycin, metronidazole,Amoxy and paracetamol. I was not getting improvement and i went back today for review and the problem stil remains. Am one month pregnant and the clinical officer prescribed for me Flucamox and paracetamol. Will this help me doctor.
I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with this UTI. First of all, none of the antibiotics you were prescribed are typically used for urinary tract infections. Perhaps whoever suggested these antibiotics was probably trying to use antibiotics that are safe to use during pregnancy. Although they likely meant well, I'm afraid that these antibiotics usually don't cover the typical organisms that cause UTI. Finally, paracetamol is used for pain and it is not an antibiotic.
Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic that can be used safely and more effectively for UTI's. I would recommend trying this antibiotic. The other thing I would recommend is getting a urine culture done, which will help identify the specific bacteria causing your infection and identify the most effective antibiotic to treat it. It is possible that due to the fact that you've used multiple antibiotics that you have a resistant organism causing your infection. Finally, I would make sure that you see a obstetrician to evaluate the health of your baby given your lengthy UTI.
Drink plenty of fluids in the meantime, and if you have any fevers over 101, flank pain, or worsening pain you should do a doctor sooner rather than later. I hope this is helpful.
