Is Fasting Blood Sugar Of 103 A Cause For Concern?

Hello I am 49 years old male. I am 5 4 tall and my weight is 150 pounds. Two days ago I had my bloodwork done and I saw that by fasting blood sugar is 103 (two years ago it was merely 90) I don t take sugar I never use alcohol never smoke. Therefore the result was quite shocking for me. Just 2 days prior to the test I went to a 9 day holiday where I unusually took desserts but make average 2 hours sport (running, walking on treadmill and using cross machine) so as not to put on much weight. Do these have any influence on my blood test reading.

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.com. I will be happy to answer you r question. The value of 103 is of no concern, this is termed by many as pre-diabetes with a normal below 100. Now diabetes is fasting blood sugar at 126, so you can see you have a lot of room before that target. Ideally this fasting level should be repeated to see if this was just a fluke or a true reading or is it in fact worse. The foods consumed days prior should not have an effect on this reading after fasting, it is really a good measure of how your body handles sugar overnight. Remember that starchy foods are converted to sugar and you dont have to neccesarily be eating sugary foods to get diabetes. If you are concerned have a HgbA1c checked and this will give you a 3 month average of your blood sugar and a level equal to or above 6.5 will mean you in fact have diabetes. I hope this helps, and good luck, thanks.
