Is Ear Pain A Common During Pregnancy?

I m currently 16w1d pregnant. I m 23, 134 lbs. I ve been having some left ear pain, nothing serious usually goes away on it s own. I will get pressure in the same ear, remaining until the ear is popped. My glands are swollen. While cleaning the left ear with a q-tip, I noticed two spots of blood on the white part. There is some pain/discomfort. Is this a pregnancy symptom or should I make an appointment with my dr?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Looking at your symptoms, you are likely suffering from Otitis External (Inflammation in the outer ear canal). It leads to gland enlargement (lymph node enlargement). Cleaning the ear by Q tip might scratch the skin of external ear canal (which might have lead to few drops of blood coming out of your ear)and lead to infection. It has nothing to do with your pregnancy.

You might need to take antibiotics (like Amoxicillin), analgesic and anti-inflammatory (like Ibuprofen), antacid (like Rantac) and topical antibiotic skin cream (like Soframycin) to be applied over the external ear canal. Avoid water going inside ear. Ear plugs may help to prevent water going inside your ear. Avoid self cleaning your ear. After taking above measures, if your symptoms are not improving, then it would be advisable to consult an otolaryngologist doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Riddhi Shah
