My mom is suffering from diabetes mastoiditis for past 3 months and has been under injections followed by medicines for some time now and no cure is in sight. She is around 55 and has been diabetic for 30 yrs now. She also takes insulin morning and evening dailly. She is unable to sleep properly and takes painkillers. Without pain killers she gets up 2-3 times at night. Please tell me if this is curable completely. Can we do surgery as a last resort. PLease help ?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Complete control of diabetes is essential to cure mastoididits. 2. If it has involved bone, it becomes difficult and surgery might be necessary to remove the dead and infected tissue. 3. Control blood sugar. Surgery is required to clear the area of infection. Then only antibiotics will work. 3 months is a long time. Get a culture and sensitivity of the organism done and take appropriate antibiotics. If it does not respond after 15 days, go for surgery. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
