Is Delayed Periods The Side Effect Of Being Off Birth Control?

I was taking birth control pills for 8 years and I stopped the end of April, in May I had a period and now I am 6 days late. I have not been tracking my ovulation but my husband and I are not preventing a pregnancy. I took a pregnancy test on the morning of the 4th day that I was late and it said negative, should I retest in a few days or do you think my cycle is just out of whack from stopping the birth control.

Hi,

Pregnancy tests detect the HCG hormone. This hormone is released from day 11 to 14 after conception. If you tested before this time period then the test would have shown up negative and you would need to wait a few days before repeating. If the test was done after this time has passed then it is truly negative and you are not currently pregnant.

The prolonged use of the contraceptive may contribute to the period delay. The other causes are:

(1) emotional stress or illness
(2) abnormal levels of thyroid hormone
(3) physical illness
(4) high levels of a hormone called prolactin
(5) inadequate nutrition or excess physical activity

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
