Is Daily Intake Of Morphine Safe For The Pain In Knee And Hip?

I am deeply concerned about a friend who has been on roxycodone for a long time (oxycodone previous to that) She is also on morphine. The pain she Is experiencing is back and hips and knees. All due to injuries) She was placed on 600 mg of morphine daily and is being educed in the amoun by 80 mg. per day on this last visit to her dr. Withdrawals are very evident . Her roxycodone is now down to 15 mg one to two times daily. She is deeply concerned that the tapering off of the morphine is too extreme and I am inquiring as to what the usual procedure is for cutting back. She is deeply depressed and takes antidepressants as well/ She has asked to be taken off the massive doses of medicines but is fearful of how much has been cut back at one time. Is there some criteria for what is safe? She is on disability and is 44 years old and alone.

There are no defined criteria on how to reduce morphine or opioid dose. But having said so, it is important that the dose has to reduced over weeks if not months. And if there is emergence of withdrawal symptoms, the dose tapering can be done more slowly or a long acting opioid like methadone can be substituted and gradually withdrawn to avoid such symptoms.
You can discuss the above information with your pin specialist. Hope this helps. Thanks.
