Is Continual Bleeding Without A Stop Possible Symptom Of Menopause ?

Hi, I m 44 years going on to 45 in June, last year January to July I had a continual bleeding that wouldn t stop. I did all the possible tests and they came back ok. Fast-forward to January 2014, I did not have a period and then it came in February 2014. It came normally from July to December 2013. Is it possible that I am experiencing preimenopause?

Hallow Dear,

You are in a perimenopausal age group. In this period of life, irregularities in the menstrual cycle, particularly delayed periods are seen; however, continual bleeding; i.e. prolonged bleeding with menorrhagia is not observed. You have to get this issue thoroughly investigated.

Initial simplest investigation you may get done is ultrasonography which will inform about any tumour in your uterus or ovaaries. If the organs are normal, please look for the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium). If it is more than 4 mm, please submit yourself for endometrial study - hysteroscopy or hysteromicroscopy. Then guided biopsy from the endometrium may be taken if needed.

Blood examination for hormonal assays like FSH, LH, Oestrogen, Progesterone, Prolactin, T3, T4 and TSH also will be of help to identify any hormonal imbalance responsible for menorrhagia.

Please report this to your Gynaecologist and undergo the required investigations for diagnose the cause and start appropriate treatment if needed.

I hope this helps you.
