Is Cartilage Buildup On The Torso Cause For Concern?

33 yrs ago I played a lot of sports. One time during a baseball game I dove for a ball. Ended up rupturing my spleen. Went in for surgery. The doctor opened my stomach up and found that the bleeding had stopped so he stapled me shut. as a result, I ve always had this hard bump at the top of an 8 inch vertical scar in the middle of my stomach starting at the bottom of my sternum. You know the little v like shape where the rib cage comes together in the middle of your chest. Over the years, this bump has grown. it s about the size of half of a golf ball now. It sit s off to the right side of my torso I went to the doctor, and he said that it s just cartilage build up. Occasionally it will give me a small amount of pain. Should I be concerned and have this looked at?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello... Thanks for posting at HCM.From your description of how the bump formed and the location it is seen,I believe you are having a condition called Keloid which is a caused by abnormal excessive scar formation. It is not a dangerous condition but there is a chance of it slowly growing and causing more symptoms like itching. So it will be better you get it checked up by a Dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis and consider treatments like intralesional steroids. Hope I have clarified your query. Will be happy to help if you need any more information.Regards,Dr.Jayasree P,MD
