Is Burning Urination And Low Grade Fever Symptoms Of UTI?

In nursing school trying to do a "nursing diagnosis" on a paper project patient. She is an active 48 yr. married, type II diabetes( managed by diet),She is complaining of burning urination, has to go oftern but only voids a little, she has tried cranberry juice with no relief. All vitals are norm. Has low grade fever of 99.0. The Dr. has prescriber her erythromycin and colace for treatment, He has ordered a strain on all urine along with insulin reg. on a sliding scale basis. Clue, #1.that I picked up on is that she only consumes about 250ml of fluid in her diet daily. My guess is that she has a fecal impaction. Would this contribute to a UTI as well?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Taking 250 ml fluid is extremely low and the patient is surely going in for dehydration. This can also cause kidney problems and infection anywhere along the urinary tract including bladder. The total fluid intake should be at least 1500 to 2000 ml each day for an adult. Diabetes also favors development of infections. Fecal impaction depends on her bowel movements and dietary intake. Fever and burning urination are certainly pointing towards an urinary tract infection.
