Is Bleeding From Nose A Common Issue In Pneumonia?

Hi, I am 51 years old, have been in good health except for asthma. I was hospitalized earlier this month with what the doctor termed as a possible lung infection... The chest x ray was clear but because of an elevated d dimer on my blood work they did a CAT scan, which they originally thought was two pulmonary embolisms but turned out to be probable evidence of infection. I have had consistent bloody mucous in my sinuses, and heavy nosebleeds from time to time.. the clotted blood makes it difficult for me to breathe so when I sometimes pick at it this causes the bloody nose.. I have never had that before.. is it common with pneumonia? I had a 10-day course of Avelox plus 10 days of prednisone.. am also on ADVAIR 250 and albutoral inhaler for the breathing issues.

Pneumonia can produce a rusty sputum but does not produce a nose bleed by itself. If you pick your nose or if the frail capillaries rupture in bouts of coughing or sneezing, it can produce nasal bleed
