Is Bleeding After Sex A Sign Of Atrophy?

I am almost 60 and had a hysterectomy when I was 33, leaving only 1 ovary. I haven't been sexually active for over 4 years. I had 6 rounds of antibiotics in 2012 for a sinus infection I did not have and my type II diabetes was out of control for about a year. I had sex a few days ago and there was light bleeding afterwards. The queries bring up all kinds of STD's but I took meds they say would cure them. I had used a douche about 6 months ago and it was uncomfortable. Is it possible this may just be atrophy?

At your age, the most common reason for bleeding after sex is exactly what you suspected, atrophy. Fortunately, this can be easily treated with topical estrogen creams. Although they are hormonal, the absorption into your body is minimal, and they are very safe and effective. Of course, there are other possible causes, and your doctor can do an exam to make sure, but atrophy is definitely most likely. I hope this was helpful, please let me know if you have any more questions.
