Is Arthrogram With Contrast Medium Painful?
I am scheduled to have an arthrogram with contrast then MRI on my right knee. Iam very "pain sensitive" and have severe anxiety. Do Doctors ever administer a "twilight" type drug for this procedure as I understand it can be a very painful experience for the patient.

In MR arthrography of knee, there is direct arthrography and indirect arthrography. The direct arthrography involves a twilight or local anesthetic injection in to the knee joint followed by contrast injection and image acquisiton.
In the indirect MR arthrography, no injection is used. The computer and signals used highlight the area in the joint cavity to give appropriate information.
