Is Alcohol Consumption Advisable While On Treatment For A Cat Bite?

Dear Doc, My husband was bitten by a homeless cat who was sick with a bone stuck in her gum preventing her from eating. He took the antirebies vaccine within an hour of the incident and had his wound washed by Iodine and later with water and soap. The hospital forgot to give him immunoglubline injection but we managed to give it to him on day 5 as we read according to WHO that it can be given before day 7. His schedule is 0,3,7,14,30,90. My question is: Can he consume alcohol during new year after the 5th injection which will be on Dec 18,2016 ? This means he will have another injection (the 6th ) on Feb 18, 2017. Will he be able to consume at least homemade wine that has minimum percentage of alcohol, and if yes, how many glasses?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. First of all I am really glad how you handled all this. A dose of immunoglobin was certainly needed and hospital should have given it on day 0. Vaccination effect your body by increasing your immunity against a specific disease whereas alcohol decreases your overall immunity, though it is advised to not take alcohol during this period. Minimum amounts may not cause much effect.

So I think you can take alcohol one time on new year but keep it to minimum. Also minimum amount is not defined, I think 2 glasses should be good.

I hope this was helpful and do let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards,
Dr. Akash Kumar
