Is Abortion In Second Trimester Due To Trisomy 21 Ratio Of 1:119 Dangerous?

Hi!
I have just entered the 5th month of my pregnancy and doc asked me to do a triple marker test in which TRISOMY 21 is 1:119. Docs have asked me to do an immediate fluid test to understand the report more clearly. Though upon asking they said if the fluid test also confirms trisomy 21 they i may have to go for abortion. Kindly advise what is right and if abortion at this stage will cause any problems now or later in life? Need un biased advice.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

What the test result means is that you have a 1 in 119 chance that your fetus may have trisomy 21, which causes the disease Down's syndrome. In women who have a risk greater than 1 in 250, it is recommended that women have a definitive test called an amniocentesis to check the genetics of the baby.

However, the risk is only one in 119, meaning you have a less than one percent chance of the test finding out anything is wrong.

In the even you do carry a fetus with Down's syndrome, it is always your choice of whether to abort the pregnancy. But when performed by a physician in a surgical setting, pregnancy termination in the second trimester can be safe and not affect future fertility.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
