Is Abnormal Cells In Lower Lining Of Esophagus Due To Barrets Esophagus?

I just had a gastroscopy yesterday and they found abnormal cells in the lower lining of my esophagus. They are doing a biopsy and I should have results in 2 weeks. I've had hoarseness for 2 years now and my main concern is the pain between my shouler blades which started 3 months ago and is daily. Is it possible to have Barrets Esophagus with the upper back pain and it not be esophagus cancer?

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Barrets esophagus is due to a long standing GERD causing the changes in the mucosa of the lower esophagus due to chronic irritation by the gastric acid. Although it might transform itself to a malignancy, this could only be ascertained by a histo-pathology report which is awaited. The back pain could have been due to chronic esophagitis resulting in esophageal spasm. Till the reports are ready, I would advise you for a proton pump inhibitor drug, and to avoid consumption of any kind of alcoholic beverages if you do.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
