Is A Gap In The Fibula, After Fracture Treatment, A Cause For Concern?

My daughter broke her tibia and fibula (compound fracture) The doctors lined up the tibia, but there is a very noticeable gap on the fibula. The doctors said it s not important. Is there any reason to be concerned? The gap between the two bone segments seem very wide.

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query.

Well, fortunately, the most part of fibula is not very important for lower leg function and larger dislocation and gaps are tolerated after fracture so in most cases it wont leave any long term consequances so you should not be worried. Only if this fracture is close to the ankle it may be problematic. In this case it can be treated with fixation or bone transplantation if necessary.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
