Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband just turned 45yrs old and went to an Urgent Care clinic near our home because he thought he may have gout in his left foot/ankle (he has had issues with gout in the past). During his appt. his BP was taken and the diastolic reading was 117! The physician on staff Rx d Norvasc 5mg daily for hypertension, my husband now has a follow up appt. w/ a physician and I was curious to know how tx is determined when it comes to the use of calcium channel blockers, beta blockers etc. Should there be other tests completed in addition to follow up and routine BP readings. Thank You, Tammmy R.
hello user , i understand your concerns . when hypertension is diagnosed some other tests are also usually perfomed like blood sugar testing, liver function test, kidney function test and an ECG. regarding treatment choice , the clinical decision is based not only on guidelines but many practical clinical factors and doctor's individual expertise and experiences with certain medicines . beta blockers are usually not first line antihypertensives , and the drugs which are commonly used are ACE inhibitors like ramipril, ARB blockers like losartan, calcium channel blockers like amlodipine especially in advancing age and diuretics in certain cases . apart from it imply common measures like low salt diet , moderate exercise atleast 30 mins daily . hope i answered your query - if satisfied please rate the answer
