Is A Concussion Possible After Riding On A Roller Coaster?

I rode a couple of roller coasters with my daughter today and had the sensation that my brain was crashing around in my head. I am a 53 year old man, and have occasionally gone on carnival rides with my kids before with no problem. I take medication for high blood pressure and high cholestral but am otherwise healthy and exercise 6 or 7 days a week.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Concussion is possible after riding a roller coaster. It is even normal for the one who is not having a hypertension or other issue.

This is in relation with the hyperdynamic cerebral circulations following the high-speed coaster giving rise to a gush of adrenergic drive from head to toes; as you are hypertensive person, you are more prone for its effects early, more intense than normal person.

Better to consult your physician regarding such adventures before riding next time because prevention is always better than cure in such cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
