Is Vagifem A Safe Medicine?

I am a 69 year old women. My OB GYN gave me free samples of Vagifem. I was on Primpro earlier in my life and was taken off because of fibrous breasts . should I be concerned to use Vagifem ? I was told once you go off hormones your same warnings apply like breast cancer, heart issues and blood clots if you start them after several years

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Vagifem is a vaginal estrogen tablet. It works by increasing the amount of estrogen in the body in certain women who cannot produce enough on their own.

Vagifem should be used for the shortest possible time at the lowest effective dose to minimize the risk of these side effects.

Commonly reported side effects of its use include: cerebrovascular accident, infection, malignant neoplasm of breast, endometrium disease, headache, and mastalgia (breast tenderness).

Kindly consult your doctor regularly about your need to use Vagifem and if any of the side effects become bothersome.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S
