Is Nurofen Safe For Fever And Sore Throat?

HI, Francesca, from Italy. My husband has a fever at 39. He took paracetamol. Has a sore throat and fever has not dropped ... I can give Nurofen syrup that I used for my daughter 5 days ago for his fever? With Nurofen she is healed immediately. The drug is called Fever and Pain Nurofen - Ibuprofen 100mg/5ml oral suspension (syrup). My husband weighs about 70 kg.

Hello dear,

First of all, the dosage formulation of the syrup is meant for pediatric use. It will not be helpful in treating an adult weighing 70 kg.
The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggests that your husband might be having upper respiratory tract infection(most probably viral infection)
Nurofen or paracetamol will only provide symptomatic relief from fever.
The throat pain and associated symptoms also needs to be taken care of.
The management consists of:
1. Drinking of warm fluids to reduce throat pain
2. Antihistamines to provide symptomatic relief from cold & cough
3. A course of antibiotic to prevent secondary bacterial infection

If symptoms still persist...it will be better to consult an ENT specialist.
Meanwhile...he should avoid cold food & drinks, maintain adequate hydration & take soft, non-spicy foods.

Hello Francesca!

Neurofen is ibuprofen - codeine suspension! which is antipyretic and also gives relief in cough. But as you mention about sore throat so he also needs some antibiotics. For kids the dose is different and adult need some larger dose. So get to your doctor and get proper medicines. I pray for his speedy recovery!
