Is Minoxidil Advisable For Severe Hair Loss?

Hello Doctor, I am 30 and unmarried and have a 12-13 years history of hair fall. It started when I crossed 16 and only aggravated with time. I have tried both homeo as well as allopathic medicines and have been consulting a senior dermatologist from one of the most reputed hospitals in delhi since last february. In this period of last one and half year, I have taken two sessions of PRP therapy and tried numerous and quite expensive topical lotions. I have been on nutritional supplements since last one and a half year. And the result is that I my hair are thinning continuously. I really dont know now what to do.Whom to approach after consulting such a senior consultant. Should I give up. I do not want to try Minoxidil as I am unmarried and I have heard that it has certain types of side effects. Neither my doctor has prescribed it to me. Can you help me out.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have gone through your description and I understand your concern.
It would be better to try Minoxidil 5% for topical application as this would help to dilate blood vessels of scalp and aid hair growth. Also its combination with Finastride would be much more beneficial as it adds anti-androgenic effect as well.
Any medication would have certain side effects, which needs to be accepted. In case it is causing symptoms which cannot be tolerated, then you may have to discontinue its use.
It takes about 6 months to 1 year of regular use to appreciate the results. Then you may have to continue the treatment for 3 to 5 years.
In case you are not willing for such treatment, you can go for permanent hair weaving and transplant.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
