I have RA, and was having severe lower back pain,so my RA doctor suggested I have an MRI .the results of this MRI mild to moderate disc space narrowing at l2-3with. 3mm annular bludge and l3-4 has 4mm right and left lateral disc protrusions and mild facet arthrosis are seen.also problems with l4-5 ans l5-s1,all with arthritis,my doctor suggested finding pain management doctor,to recieve ESI injections.do you find this to be correct.my pain in lower part of back is making my legs feel numb at times and so much pain that it s leaving me to not be able to do almost nothing.i just need relief, and I do take humara injucrtions and methotrexate

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly
thanks for using healthcaremagic site ,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..

For my own patients i recommend them if medical treatment isnt enough it is effective with most of cases especially cases with lateral disc protrusions .
epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve neck, arm, back, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves. ESI may be performed to relieve pain caused by spinal stenosis, spondylolysis, or disc herniation.

sometimes in more severe cases minor endoscopic interventions or spinal fixation surgeries may be suggested by a neurologist if ESI injections for 6 consecutive months isnt effective . i hope you wont need such interventions .
