Is Doxycycline Advisable For Urinary Tract Infection?
I went to doctor for a UTI and they gave me Macrobid. The night I started taking it I couldn t sleep at all and felt nauseous. I called the next day and they switched me to Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg twice a day. That has been fine and today they called and said that the doxy wouldn t be good for a Urinary Tract Infection due to E Coli Bacteria and I should go back to Macrobid. I m confused I thought it worked for UTI s
Hi, thanks for your question. Please rate my answer if you are satisfied. It's not that doxy will or will not work for UTI. It's about the specific strain of bacteria that is infecting your urinary tract. They must have performed a test called culture and sensitivity on your urine which tells us what bacteria is there and to which antibiotic it is sensitive. The strain of Ecoli infecting your urinary tract may not be sensitive to doxy that's why they told you to switch back. But you still may have a choice because usually bacteria are sensitive to more than one antibiotic. If you have issues with macrobid, you must have other options too. And in case they are still guessing, you can have a culture and sensitivity test done on your urine and find out your other options of antibiotics. You should talk to your physician about this.
