Is Amitriptyline Advisable Along With Topiramate?

I take 150 mg topiramate daily for migraine prevention. lately have had a lot of trouble with insomnia. can t seem to sleep more than 3-4 hours at a time. I used to take amitriptyline at night for the same problem. is it safe to mix these two drugs?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The side effects of Topiramate include heat production in the body causing increased temperature along with decreased sweating. These effects are intensified when Topiramate is combined with Amitryptiline and you might be at risk of developing heat stroke. Hence, I would advise not to take Topiramate with Amitriptyline.

You should contact your prescribing physician for the sleeping problem you are experiencing and he will prescribe you a medicine that does not interact with Topiramate and is safe to take in your medical condition.
