Is Adalat Retard Advisable For Avoiding Preterm Labour?

Hi, I m 31 weeks pregnant and started to have regular contractions (every 5/7 min) yesterday. Came to the maternity, where they gave me progesterone (utrogestan) but with no effect. Then, they gave me Adalat Retard 20mg. That almost completely stop the contractions for 5 hours, but they are returning now. They gave me another adalat pill after 6/7h. But I was reading online it is for high blood pressure? My blood pressure was normal. And also there are not known effects on the baby, so I m afraid to continue to take this medication. Is it something gynaecologists would prescribe to avoid preterm labour?

Hi & Welcome to HCM.
Adalat Retard contains Nifedipine and is commonly used to relax vascular smooth muscle for the treatment of hypertension. It is also used by the gynecologist for preventing preterm labour in patients prone to it.
Since you had regular contractions which are premature (31st Week) which puts you at risk for preterm labour, and hence the medication Adalat Retard has been prescribed.
It is administered orally in a loading dose of 30 mg, followed by 20 mg given every four to eight hours for 24 hours, and then a maintenance dose of 10 mg every eight hours until 35 to 37 weeks of pregnancy or delivery.
It does not cause any effects on the baby, but it can cause dizziness, sleepiness in the mother. However, it is safe to continue taking it, just make sure you do not get up from lying down position too fast. Monitor your blood pressure, as the drug can cause hypotension.
Best wishes.
