Infant Has Vomiting, Nausea, Fever, Pale And Grey Stool, Salmonella Bacteremia. On Zofran. What Is Going On?

I have a 17 mo old daughter who attends preschool. She seemed fine yesterday when I picked her up but around 2am she vomited in her crib twice. She seemed nauseous so I gave her ondansetron 4mg 1/2 tab (dissolvable tab). She was able to fall asleep for 2 hours then started crying bc she needed a diaper change. Her stool was pale grey and somewhat loose. Some small formed normal colored decal material was present too - prob what was most distal in the colon but I'm concerned about the color. She hasn't eaten anything unusual and has no fever. She is not currently on any medication (just that zofran I gave her once) and is otherwise a healthy little girl. I do have to mention that last August she had salmonella bacteremia and was hospitalized for 2 wks until neg cultures were obtained. I know it may lie dormant in the gall bladder but I wasn't sure for how long - I thought we would be out of the woods by now with that but thought it was worth mentioning. No one knows how she got salmonella by the way. Any advice on the current situation would be appreciated / thanks :)

Hi.
Thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic

Contaminated food or water causes typhoid. Items handled by carriers also form the source of contamination. 1 to 4 % of people infected with typhoid harbor the bacteria in gall bladder, sometimes even up to 5 years. Typhoid carriers are asymptomatic but shed S. typhi in large numbers in stool. These organisms are usually resistant to common antibiotics used in treatment of typhoid.

Infected typhoid patients are frequently the carriers and are the sources of typhoid infection. Although relapses are not common, it does occur in some persons. it could be a recurrence of typhoid for your daughter. It normally presents with symptoms of typhoid like fever and diarrhea.

You should consult your treating Dr for confirmation of diagnosis. To rule out typhoid, you have to do stool culture, urine culture and widal test.If found positive she will need a course of antibiotics and usually the relapse will be less severe.

I hope this is useful to you.
