Difficulty Bending Fingers Due To Pain And Stiffness. Taken Steroid Injections. Suggestions?

I have for sometime had problems with both hands whereby I cannot bend my fingers. I have a steroid injections which worked for a while but now my fingers are again very stiff especially in the morning almost unable to bend. I have had one finger operated to trim the tendon bridge but has not worked. I also had a nerve test which found my carpel tunnel was restricting my nerve and was sent to theatre to relieve but at the point of going into the operating room the surgeon aid this was not the problem and carried out the tendon trim instead. Now the hands are worse than ever and after going through all this I am reluctant to go back to the same hospital as all the have stated is hand therapy twice. I do the correct exercises which do help along with apply ice packs and Ibuprofen but the stiffness and pain in the hands seems to be increasing. I have also experience serious numbness in the hands. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Graham

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Early morning stiffness involving the small joints of the hands is the classical symptom presentation of RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS unless proved otherwise.

A few investigations like RA factor, C reactive protein levels, ESR and xrays of the involved joints will diagnose the condition.

I suggest you to consult either an orthopedic surgeon or a rheumatologist for further workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
