How To Wake Up A Patient After Thalamic Hemorrhage?
My dad suffered a thalamic bleed a week ago today. He was treated in the ER w/i 30-45 minutes of the occurrence.
He is 84 years old and suffers from hypertension. He also has untreated sleep apnea.
He was given Haldol and another medication combination the name of which escapes me. This was on Monday night. He was immediately knocked out and has not totally awoken since. He can answer simple questions and recognizes my mom, brother and me.
Can we expect him to awaken completely to proceed to rehab?
I am sorry to hear about your father who recently had a stroke and was given medication I presume for being combative. The medication they used Haldol is commonly used for patients that are having hallucination or being combative and a danger to themselves while in a hospital setting. This medication and possibly another one will take several days to completely be metabolized by his system. Give him more time and prevent him for getting anymore medications for agitation and he should wake up and start therapy soon
