How To Treat Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

Hello Mam, My HB is 8.2 and Vitamin b12 is 90. I consulted a gynecologist and she has prescribed orofer xt for HB and 2B12 for Vitamin B12 deficiency. My queries are below: 1) Is the prescription correct? 2) Side effects of the above medicines? 3)Would my menstrual cycle get affected? 4)For how long should i continue the medicines?

Firstly in this case it is important to rule out the cause of the anemia whether it is just because of vit B12 deficiency or it is due to deficiency of both accordingly the medications can be considered.
As I am not having the report of you CBC in my hand comment on the type of anemia can not be done. But considering the female gender the chances of both having iron & vitamin B12 deficiency are more.

1) So if both things are deficient we can say that above prescription is correct.
But my suggestion regarding the prescription is that T folic acid 5mg ( Tab Folvite ) once a day should be added in above prescription. Moreover it is better to take Vit B12 in injection form rather than only oral supplementation as IV vit B12 will increase vit B12 levels early.

2) Regarding the side effects - Tab orofer xt may cause black coloured stools , constipation & nausea no other significant side effects

3)your menstrual cycle would not get affected rather it will regularize if at all it is irregular so need not to worry about that

4) the above mention medication should be continued until correction of you HB , incase of iron deficiency you have to continue iron tablet 3 months more after correction of HB to replenish the Iron Stores.

My advice is that before continuing iron therapy type of the anemia should be confirmed.
