Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good Morning Doc! I have recently been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and have just recently controlled my flare up. How can I keep this better under control and have you ever heard of anything that has either cured or tremendously helped any of your patients. Ryan age 32, 150 lbs, & health other than this issue.
I see a lot of patients with ulcerative colitis. The first line treatment of UC is usually steroids, which usually will treat flare ups of UC. For maintenance therapy, many gastroenterologists will use a medication called Humira.
The cure for ulcerative colitis is removal of the colon, which is done by a general surgeon or colorectal surgeon. If this is done, usually UC is cured. The only caveat here is that UC can sometimes be mistaken for Crohn's disease, and removing the colon will not cure Crohn's disease. I'd recommend having an experience gastroenterologist manage your ulcerative colitis, and ask them about referring you to a general surgeon or colorectal surgeon for removal of your colon if you don't want to take any medications and be cured.
I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
