Hi there Ryan I see a lot of patients with ulcerative colitis. The first line treatment of UC is usually steroids, which usually will treat flare ups of UC. For maintenance therapy, many gastroenterologists will use a medication called Humira. The cure for ulcerative colitis is removal of the colon, which is done by a general surgeon or colorectal surgeon. If this is done, usually UC is cured. The only caveat here is that UC can sometimes be mistaken for Crohn s disease, and removing the colon will not cure Crohn s disease. I d recommend having an experience gastroenterologist manage your ulcerative colitis, and ask them about referring you to a general surgeon or colorectal surgeon for removal of your colon if you don t want to take any medications and be cured.
