How To Treat Tonsillectomy?

I got a tonsillectomy 2 months ago and a week ago I scratched my throat on food. It has hurt for a week now and sometimes feels better and sometimes hurts worse. How long should this take to heal?? I am a smoker also. Is that causing a longer recovery time?
