Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.
Well, the age of 65-years old puts you in risk for
cardiovascular disease.
Hypertension, superventricular arrhythmias and coronary
artery disease cannot be excluded. Now, I do not posses the information if you are treated with any drugs, but this may be hypertension (
high blood pressure). It should be treated and controlled, i.e. kept under 140/90 mmHg. I would suggest you to be started on a
beta-blocker or a
calcium channel blocker, combined with a low-dose angiotensinogen converting enzyme inhibitor. An additional heart beat is not always arrhythmia, because it can happen to anyone, at all ages. It can happen after physical activity, when under psychological
stress etc. If they are rare, and linked to the activities I mentioned, then they almost always are totally benign. To further evaluate this odd phenomenon that is happening to you, I would recommend you to do an EKG and a 24-hour rhythm monitor registration, to see how often are they present and whether they have any clinical and functional significance. After we have the results back, if there is anything worrisome, proper treatment and precautions should be installed, to further treat and prevent future bursts of a possible arrhythmia.
I hope I was helpful with my answer. Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
