How To Treat Swollen Face And Itchiness In The Neck Caused After Taking Codeine?

My daughter had a small surgery on her hand a few days ago, and the doctor prescribed codeine for pain post-op. Two days later she experienced a reaction to the codeine, swilling of her face and neck, itching on her neck and back. Spoke to her doctor and he obviously advised stop taking the codeine, and to take 50mg of Benadryl every 4-6 hours for the swilling reaction. She has been taking that now for 36 hours and it does not seem to be helping much. Is there something else she could try to help reduce the swelling/itching reaction? My email YYYY@YYYY

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your query the symptoms of itching of her face and neck along with itchy back seems to be most probably an Allergic reaction only and if Codeine was the recently taken new drug, it can be a cause for reaction..

As the drug will gradually get out of the system the symptoms will subside..
If presently Benadryl is not working consult an Emergency service and they can advise her injectable anti allergics and steroid to relieve symptoms faster..

Even if after athat the symptoms does not subside or recurs you need to consult an Allergist and get an Allergic test done to rule out the cause of the symptoms and treatment can then be appropriately done..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
