How To Treat Swelling And Redness In Gums Inspite Of Taking Metronidazole For Infection?

I had an infected wisdom tooth 3 weeks ago. I went to the dentist as my upper right 8 tooth is partially erupted and the gym was very red and swollen. I couldn't sleep for 2 days because of the pain. The first dentist who saw me looked and then burst the ulcer with a probe and got me to rinse. He didn't do anything else for me. My mouth continued to hurt on the inside for the next week but then the pain suddenly left the inside of my mouth and I began to get swelling on that side of my face and the pain was gone. I revisited the dentist and saw a different one this time who said it sounded like the infection had spread. She took an X Ray and prescribed me metronizadole for 5 days. The swelling and pain left once I finished the course but now 2 weeks later the pain on that side of my face has returned and a little swelling where it was before. It's not really painful just tingles and feels uncomfortable. I've also had earache/burning in my right ear as well as a painful neck from time to time. I'm not sure if the tooth infection is linked to the discomfort on that side of my face or whether I have a sinus infection. Should I return to my dentist or go to the doctor?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms there is inflammation of gum flap (PERICORONITIS) that surround or partially covers the wisdom tooth and is caused due to infection as food deposits between the gum flap and wisdom tooth..
This causes pain and swelling and you need to take antibiotics like Amoxicillin and Metronidazole, Anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen to relieve pain, warm saline gargles.
So cold compresses over the swelling..

In case if still pain and swelling still does not subside or there are recurring episodes of swelling and infection removal of gum flap or extraction of tooth has to be done..

Hope this information helps..
