How To Treat Sudden Growth Of Hair On Chin And Acne?

Hi,I have got sudden growth of hair on my chin which was not there before and it is also accompanied by acne. Doctor has suggested it is due to imbalance in hormones . I have to undergo a few tests. I have been advised to use Elyn ointment to eradicate hair growth. Does it really help? once my hormonal problem is taken care of, will these hairs vanish on their own? I am worried. pls advise. Thanks

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Acne along with coarse facial hair is a sign of hormonal imbalance.
However, on lab testing for hormones levels, females may have normal levels of hormones but they may still develop coarse facial hair, which is said to be due to "cutaneous hyperandrogenism" i.e either the skin hormones levels are higher in spite of normal blood levels of hormones Or the hormonal receptors are over-responsive to normal levels of androgens.

Once confirmed by laboratory tests the next step would be to start on monthly hormonal pills (containing a combination of estrogen and a progestational agent) for the next 6- 12 months to settle down the hormonal irregularity or cutaneous hyperandrogenism.

Elyn cream contains eflornithine hydrochloride, which inhibits hair metabolism interfering with the hair growth cycle, thereby reducing the rate of hair growth.
The effects with this cream are usually appreciable after 4-6 weeks and are reversible on discontinuation of treatment.
For existing coarse facial hair, I would suggest you to go for Laser Hair Reduction which is a safe and reliable method of reducing coarse facial hair. They usually don't vanish on there own even when your hormonal balance is restored with pills.

Once your hormonal imbalance or cutaneous hyperandrogenism is taken care of you by appropriate treatment as decided by your doctor, you probably would not develop any further coarsening of facial hair.
