How To Treat Severe Throat Pain?

Hi there I am a 36 year old female and I have severe left sided lower (near epiglottis) throat pain id describe it as passing saliva past an open wound it is so painful. I m also very fatigued, ENT surgeon has put a camera down my nose to throat and describes it as very odd as its only on one side and stated that it looks like a burn, he has started me on penicillin and metronidazole for 10 days. My pain is very slightly improving after 3 full days of treatment The camera shows a ayrepiglottic erythema and an inflamed Tagus base, the throat swab is clear. Crp is 60. I wonder if you have any idea what this may be please? Any help would be appreciated Kind Regards Christie

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severe throat pain which seems to be due to infection in throat leading to Strep throat. It could be due to bacterial infection of upper respiratory tract as well , but possibility of viral infection will also be there . Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances , do warm saline rinses and avoid carbonated beverages.

I would suggest you to start with warm saline gargles , betadine gargles 3-4 times a day and continue penicillin and metronidazole , if there is improvement and complete the course. If condition doesn't get better anymore then consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like viral infection . Doctor may prescribe antiviral along with anti inflammatory .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
