My husband had a red spot on his back and when I looked closed at it the center ha a tiny blck spot.... I was sure it was an in-grown hair. We left it alone until today when it started itching and swelled. I took a needle and tweezers to it when we got home thinking it was just the in-grown getting infected, but as I opened it up and squeezed all of this hard white stuff came out with a lot of puss too. It Wha the strangest thing, not a typical pimple.... Much bigger.
I would keep a possibility of an infected sebaceous cyst.
If I was the treating doctor I would have advised an empirical oral antibiotic for a week OR 10 days (My choice of oral antibiotic would have been Amoxycillin 500mg in combination with clavulanic acid 125 mg, thrice daily, for a week OR Cephalexin 500ng thrice daily OR Cefadroxil 500mg twice daily, for a week). That would take care of the infection.
An OTC pain killer e.g ibuprofen once or twice daily would help you deal with the pain.
Once the infection resolves, sebaceous cyst can be removed by surgical excision, in which the entire cyst along with the wall is removed, to prevent any recurrence.
