How To Treat Numbness In Pelvic And Knee Area After Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

On May 29, 2015, I had a total knee replacement. When I was awakened from surgery. I was asked to move my leg. Not only could I not move my leg, it was also numb from pelvis to below knee. I was told this was normal and each day, we went through same thing. It is now going on 4 months and my leg is still numb and I cannot move my leg. My surgeon and the anesthesiologist both admitted that injuries to my femoral and sciatic nerves were caused by anesthesiologist during nerve block. When I was discharged from hospital, we had to get strangers to help get me in car. Once home, I had to sit on my bottom with my replaced knee in straight brace, and I had to drag myself up 15 steps. I am now stuck upstairs in my bedroom., praying that there is no fire or other emergency because I would perish. I just received an email that stated the hospital investigation is complete and they do not feel that I am owed any monetary damage. I have been an educator for 20 years and now I see no future beyond the 4 walls of my bedroom. There has to be something I can do. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I have gone through your question and understand your concern. I am so sorry to hear the suffering, sometimes treatment of one problem can lead to another problem. Sciatic nerve injury patient is to be examined in detail to treat that is extent of injury a partial injury or full injury to nerve determines the possibility of treatment. In some patients the nerve regenerate on its own in few months without any medical intervention.
Consult a Neuro-physician to get better examination and know the extent of injury. Physical therapy along with medications for pain will be of great help in sciatic nerve injury along with nerve fiber re-generation vitamin B supplements like Renerve.
Start with moderate physical activity on your own by sitting in one place and trying to move the numb limb slowly while seated. Gradually increase the activity and surely the nerve will heal in a course of months.
Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
