How To Treat Mild Stenosis Despite Suffering From Sciatica And Osteoarthritis?

I am a 78 year with Reynauds and lots of osteoarthritis. Several Drs over the years have suggested hip replacement. started having sciatica in other leg from buttocks to whole leg. MRI showed mild stenosis. Sent me to another Dr who said he thought nothing too scary with back and did an epidural injection, prescribed therapy with exercise to strengthen core and traction. Have had two sessions but no traction. Still some pain but 95% better. Had evaluation for hip replacement, said no, it would not help me to walk and not to be done, maybe if got to point of X Ray injections didn t help. He suggested seeing a spinal Dr. for possible surgery. I said No I am not having any back surgery, but family Dr. on suggestions to follow he had given me previously said stenosis was usually not very successful and advised against it. Today when I told him Dr. that had MRI report wanted me to see spinal Dr. and I said no. Family reversed his notes on how to deal with the problem and said he thought I should see about surgery. What is your opinion please.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
78yrs is the age in which mostly drs prefer the patient to be put on conservative measures and most drs defer from surgeries for most problems. In my view you better consult a qualified physiotherapist who will examine you and decide what kind of exercises are suited to you and if required he will put you on diathermy treatment which is helpful in alleviating pain. In addition you have to have balanced easily digested diet, adequate fluid intake,no smoking and no alcohol and regular yoga and meditation will help you.in any spinal surgery risk is more so in my view as far as possible better not ot go for surgery and go for lifestyle changes.
