How To Treat Knee Pain And Swelling?

I have been having knee problems for awhile, now. I have seen a doctor, which took x-rays and ended up giving me medicine for swelling. Of course, it did not work. I have ordered knee wraps with copper in them, havent received yet, hopefully they will help. I was wondering, why a doctor would not give me an MRI. Any thoughts, PLEASE!
