How To Treat Intense Knee Pain After An ACL Tear?

Hello sir, Please go through my detailed problem and advice me. I was allegedly skidded when I was going on bike and I tried to stop skidding on my foot. My left leg was strongly hit the ground running at 50km speed and I heard a tick sound in my leg. I consulted orthopedist he told grade 2 acl tear after seeing MRI. He told surgery is not required asked me to take rest for 3 weeks and consult physio. During initial rest period my quadriceps have become thin and very weak. I took rest and following physiotherapy exercise. I consulted orthopedist in between and it is 3rd year still I am suffering with pain in my knee and I can walk but I can t run and quat fully as of now. Please advice me should I go for surgery. How much rest is required. How much time it takes for healing. I am working in private company and I can t afford more than 2 weeks leave. My age is 36 now and I am managing the injury since 3years with a knee cap. Please advice. Sreenivas T,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

After hearing your detailed history I suggest you to visit a physician who has a doctorate in 'sports medicine' (M.D. in sports medicine). Proper physiotherapy can make a person with complete ACL tear run fast and climb stairs with ease. Yours is grade 2 and by this time it should have healed completely. They deal with ACL tears on a regular basis and train your collateral muscles to make them stronger and help in supporting the knee joint. Pain exists due to the over straining of your muscles which normally wouldn't get over involved.

A physician in sports medicine will teach you the right exercises and will also help you overcome the problem you are facing. Surgery is also a permanent cure but will demand a lengthy recovery time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohd Awais Ilyas
