Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Treat Ingrown Toenail In A Diabetic Person?
My husband had his toenails clipped last week at a local VA clinic., The nurse had to go pretty deep to get the ingrown toenail out. Today it is very red and sore. A neighbor told us to soak it in Epsom Salts.. He is a diabetic. We have been putting neosporin on it but it is looking worse. What should we do?
Thank you very much for asking. Foot infections in diabetics can become serious, and are easier to treat if we start early, such as with the symptoms you are describing.
In a patient without diabetes, I would encourage another day or two of warm soaks with Epsom Salts, soapy water, or warm washcloths, and the antibiotic ointment of your choice, but since you say it is looking worse, and your husband is a diabetic, I would recommend that you call your doctor.
If your husband is otherwise feeling well, a visit to check and treat an early foot infection should be fairly easy and quick, and your doctor should be able to get you in soon. Please keep doing the warm soaks and antibiotic ointment until the appointment.
I hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help. I hope your husband is feeling much better soon.
