Hello and welcome to HCM,
Presence of gap in knees and damage to cartilage suggests a degenerative disorder affecting the knee joint.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition which affects the joints most common being knee joints.
Osteoarthritis is characterized by pain in joints and difficulty in walking. It is an age related disorder.
The damage done cannot be reversed but can be managed by preventing further damage to the joint.
Avoiding certain movements like climbing and getting down the stairs, sitting in particular posture are some of measures to be followed.
Hyaluronic acid supplements also help to maintain the integrity of cartilage in knee joint.
I suggest you to consult an orthopedician for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and thus management.

Thanks and take care
