How To Treat Ear Pain?

Hi, I am having ear pain and when I pop the ears I hear a sound like holding a plastic cup up to your ear and scratching the bottom of the cup, or like a coin being dropped in water, this happened after a drive in the mountains with a cold. Suggestions?

Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your query and understand the discomfort you are suffering from.According to the symptoms you have described, history of travel in cold its mostly due to Eustachian tube blockage which results in tense eardrum leading to pain in ears with tinnitus(perception of various sounds).

In my opinion there is nothing much to worry about, in such cases symptoms resolve in 1-2 weeks.I usually advice my patients with similar symptoms to do a Valsalva maneuver(forcing air out with mouth closed, nose pinched after a deep breath in) , anti-histaminic and analgesic for relief of symptoms.

If the symptoms still persist after 2 weeks you can consult an ENT specialist about getting an audiometry done apart from otoscopic examination of ear.

Hope you find my answer useful.Take care.
