How To Treat Dry Cough?

Hi Dr. grief, I recently started coughing about 2 weeks ago. The first week, it was like a dry cough and this week the cough sounds more congested with some mucus. I woke up this morning and coughed pretty hard and when I spit, there was blood. Is this normal?

Regarding your query for treatment of dry cough, first of all I would like to say that dyr cough is most of the times is because of infection in upper respiratory tract but trachitis and bronchitis also produces dry irritating cough.

Before treatment proper diagnosis is must and for this you have to do-

1- X-Ray paranasal sinuses.

2- X-Ray chest.

3- Cultur and sensitivity of throat swab.

4- Gram's staining of throat swab.

Allergy in respiratory tract is also well known for giving irritating cough. So ideally a thorough examination of your respiratory system is must to identify weather infection or allergy is responsible for it and what is the site of involvement than only proper treatment may be planed. Till you are in waiting for your doctor you may take cough sedative lozenges as these will give soothing effect in throat and you will feel some relief.
