How To Treat A Large Swelling On Shin Caused After Injury?

My husband had a hard blow to his shin/calf area by a line drive baseball, during baseball hitting practice earlier today. He proceeded to play 11 holes of golf a few hours later, where he could hardly bare any weight on his leg and he could not continue his round. There is a huge large swollen area, but no visible bruise in the area where the baseball hit him. The swollen area is hot to the touch, and the surrounding area is cold, even a half hour after icing it. He is concerned that it may be broken/fractured. It is a holiday weekend. What should I do?

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have large swelling on shin caused after injury. Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to certain reasons like hematoma , fracture , or soft tissue injury . I would suggest you to do icing several times a day for first 48 hours after that apply warm compresses , keep your leg elevated and take ibuprofen or acetaminopehn for pain . Consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with physical examination . Doctor may drain the hematoma , give plaster or recommend physical therapy .
