How To Reduce Pain In The Outer Side Of Leg?

My mother is 84 years old. She has a pain in the outer side of her right leg in an area the size of a large hand. The pain is mild and present all the time and is worse when standing. It is worse yet after climbing the stairs. Is this a serious condition and is there anything to be done to alleviate the pain?
